Basic Backpacking Field Trip - Marmot Pass

Field trip: Basic Backpacking

Basic Backpacking Field Trip - Marmot Pass

Overnight field trip for the Basic Backpacking Course. This is the last scheduled activity for the course.

  • Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 11.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,300 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph

*This is all pending snow levels/safe conditions. Location subject to change.*

Plan is to meet at the Upper Big Quilcene trailhead  (47.8278, -123.0408) at 9am on Friday. We will do a preliminary gear check and backpack fitting in the parking lot, and hope to be moving by 10am at a pace that is comfortable to everyone (usually averages out to 1.5mph).

Plan is to camp at Camp Mystery (4.5 miles in) on Friday after our leisurely start.

Saturday we will complete the 2 mile trip up to the pass and explore. We will do this part with just day packs and 10 essentials.

We can then return to camp, pack up, and then go down to Shelter Rock Camp to spend Saturday night, which is only 2.5 miles out from the trailhead. This will make our Sunday exit easier and also give participants experience with packing up and moving camps on multiday trips.

Sunday we will have breakfast and then complete the last couple miles out, exiting the trip by noon at the latest.

About Basic Backpacking Field Trips

The Basic Backpacking Field Trip is the final scheduled activity of the Basic Backpacking Course.  For most students it will be their first overnight trip in the backcountry.  Basic Backpacking Field Trips are usually single-night trips along Easy or Moderate routes that do not present any unusual technical challenges.

*This trip will happen rain or shine.* Multiple emails will be sent out prior to the trip with weather details, gear lists, and other important details.
