Youth Program

Mountaineers Summer Camp - Olympia

Beginning Backpack Week! We will spend Monday and Tuesday learning the basics of backpacking before leaving for a 3 day/2 night backpack trip to Dosewallips. We will return on Friday afternoon with stories and adventures to share.

This exciting week of Camp is for campers ages 8-13 and includes 2 days of local adventures, and 3 days/ 2 nights backpacking and exploring the Dosewallips abandoned road and campground.

Monday - We will spend the day in Olympia getting to know each other with fun games and ice breakers, followed by planning and preparing for the week ahead.  We will  go over  backpacking basics, like how to pack your backpack, set up a tent, filter water, and cook outdoors. We will also cover some wilderness first aid skills and learn how to Leave No Trace while we’re in the wilderness. We’ll cap off the day with some fun games, and final prep check list for the trip.

Campers will arrive Tuesday morning with their backpack packed with gear. Although we will not leave for another day, we will spend the morning doing a pack check, and making sure everyone is prepared to go.  We will spend the afternoon with Salmon Preserve Center learning about the local salmon and helping to create a safe environment for them.

Wednesday will be the start of our backpack trip. We will drive to Dosewallips abandoned road and hike to Elk horn campground, about 2.7 miles of walking. We will work together to set up camp and adventure before dinner. Our evening will be filled with stargazing, songs, stories, and more.

Thursday will be a day hike to the old Dosewallips campground, which is now abandoned and fun to explore! We will visit waterfalls, play near the riverbead, and enjoy games in the large open fields before returning to our camp.

Friday morning will be spent exploring in the morning before we pack up and prepare to head home. We will have one final adventure along the Hood Canal as we return to Olympia  We will arrive back on Friday around 4:00 with time to share our stories with our families.
