Mountaineering-Oriented First Aid

Mountaineering Oriented First Aid course

Course consists of 3 lecture sessions Feb 26 (6 pm-10pm) ,  Feb 28 and March 1 (8:00 am to 5 pm)

Location of Training: Jefferson County Fire Department 1 Station 1-4, Cape George. Station is located at 3850 Cape George Rd., Port Townsend, WA 98368

Course Goals:

  1. Presentation and discussion of considerations in patient care in a wilderness setting with extended prehospital care times.
  2. Practice in teams, with hands-on activities utilizing typical field equipment, caring for actor patients.

Prerequisites:  Either a current first aid card or the certificate generated from taking the American Heart Association's “Heartsaver® First Aid Online Part 1” online training (see https://www.onlineaha.org/courses ).

Class Outline:

Thursday- classroom topics for presentation and discussion (chapters 1-4, 11, 18, Appendices on Improvised Litters and SOAP note)

  1. Wilderness First Aid introduction, legal issues, documentation
  2. Scene Size-up
  3. Patient Assessment
  4. Evacuation

Saturday- classroom topics for presentation and discussion (chapters 5-7, 10, 12-17, 19-20, 22-25)

  1. Trauma
    1. Wound Management
    2. Orthopedic Injuries
    3. Head and Spinal Injuries
  2. Medical
    1. Respiratory
    2. Cardiac
    3. Abdominal
    4. Altered Mental Status
    5. Allergic Reactions
  3. Environmental
    1. Heat/Cold
    2. Hydration
    3. Lightning
    4. Drowning
    5. Altitude
    6. Avalanche

Sunday- scenarios will be conducted both inside and outside giving each team five opportunities for hands-on practice and team-building.

Competency: As a result of participating in this training, members will heighten awareness and gain skills necessary for patient care in remote environments.

The course text will be Wilderness Basic Life Support  (2013, Travel Medicine Press; Ingebretsen) Students are expected to purchase this text themselves and read the relevant chapters prior to the classroom session (see Course Outline below)
