This is the skier-friendly field trip - use either snowshoes or skis/splitboard. Practice winter camping skills, try out gear, learn hands-on about how to be safe and comfortable camping in the backcountry in winter conditions.

Longmire ranger station, 8:00am. Tire chains are required by Mt. Rainier National Park. Park entrance fee or America the Beautiful parks pass required. 

Field trip may be canceled, rescheduled or relocated due to weather and conditions. The park does not guarantee that the road will be open.

If parking is an issue at the Narada Falls trailhead we will relocate to the Paradise area.

  • site selection
  • how to set up a winter camp
  • cooking food
  • gathering water
  • getting around in winter
  • construction of emergency shelters
