Mentor Group Practice Camp

Field trip: Backpacking Building Blocks (B3) Course

Mentor Group Practice Camp - Magnuson Park

This practice camp for Linda and Jennifer’s mentor group at Magnuson Park. Try out your gear in a low-risk, practice environment! Students will "backpack" approx. 0.5 miles into the park. We'll then practice setting up our camp, treating water, and preparing a hot meal. Early priority for registration will be given to students in Linda and Jennifer’s mentor group.

Meet at 10am in the Mountaineers Program Center courtyard, Rain or Shine ready to go with
boots on and your backpack packed.  We'll hike about 1 mile to Kite Hill, our "campsite".  After our activities we'll return to the Program Center about 3pm.

We'll pretend we're on a real overnight backpack and do everything like we are on the trail; hike
with your full pack, set up a safe and weather-proof camp, filter water, safely use your stove,
and take a nap.  We will also discuss Leave no Trace principles, food storage, and menus.  You
can try out your gear, and check out your mentors' gear and fellow mentees' gear too.

You don't need to have a complete gear yet, but bring or borrow as much as you can using your Basic
gear checklist.  The goal is to help you prepare and have confidence for our first backcountry
trip with the support of our mentor group.

Like a real trip, a "Hello Hiker" email will be sent to you about one week before the event.  It will
provide more details about the day, what to bring in your gear, and inclement weather hiking
