We'll pretend we're on a real overnight backpack and do everything like we're on the trail; hike with your full pack, set up a safe and weather-proof camp, filter water, safely use your stove, take a nap. We'll also discuss Leave no Trace principles, food storage, and menus. You can try out your gear, and check out your mentors' and fellow mentees' gear too. You don't need to have a complete kit yet, but bring or borrow as much as you can using your Basic Kit gear checklist. The goal is to help you prepare and have confidence for our first backcountry trip with the support of our mentor group.
Like a real trip, a "Hello Hiker" email will be sent to you about one week before the event. It will provide more details about the day, what to bring in your kit, and inclement weather hiking tips.
Meet at 10am in the Mountaineers Program Center's courtyard, rain or shine ready to go with boots on and your backpack packed. We'll hike about 1 mile to Kite Hill, our "campsite". After our activities we'll return to the Program Center about 3pm.
Required Equipment
Bring your trail shoes and backpack loaded with all of the gear that you have rented, borrowed or bought to date, and all of your questions!
