Winter Scramble - Stegosaurus Butte

A short & pleasant winter outing.

  • Snow and ice on road
  • Snow & ice on trail from the parking lot, recommend microspikes

By far the easiest winter scramble I have ever led at just over 2 miles, and 1100' gain.  We did a late Sunday morning trip and took about 2 1/2 hours, with plenty of time for breaks and pictures.

In the summer, this would really just be a steep hike, but this time of year, there was just enough snow and ice to make a little interesting.

Excellent views of Garfield from the first false summit, then great views of Preacher from the viewpoint a little further at the true summit.

Road is great, however the snow/ice begins about 2 or 3 miles before the parking lot.  Also there is a sign that no permit is necessary to park in winter (bathroom is locked).
