Winter Scramble - Sourdough Mountain (winter)

Great snow conditions in spite of the heavy snowfall of past weeks, but with only brief wintry views through the shifting clouds on our way to Point 6308.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • As always, the trail had a few downed trees (a representative photo from 2011 can be seen here), and one of these was sufficiently denuded of bark and branches (with a slippery surface) such that upon being disturbed it accelerated downhill at a great rate.  When crossing these trees be very sure they are adequately attached or that you give them a wide berth.  Fortunately in our case no one was snagged by the rapidly moving tree.

Great snow conditions in spite of the heavy snowfall of past weeks, but with only brief wintry views through the shifting clouds.  There was snow at the cars with snowshoes required after only a short distance. Encountered a consistent hard snow crust at ~4300' that allowed us to make good time on our way to Point 6308.   The narrowing in the ridge at ~5500' had adequate snow cover to allow good self belay w/ice axes. Total time was just under 10 hours with 6 hours up.
