Winter Scramble - Round Mountain

A solid winter scramble that belies its mundane name.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Snow conditions which allowed for good kick stepping were ideal for this scramble.  In hard or low snow conditions this route could be more challenging. Expect some steep slopes along the way.

Road conditions were good up to blocked off abandoned bridge at around 1,600 ft. Somebody had cleared downed trees to that point.  The trip starts with a short stretch of abandoned logging road and from there it is off trail up pleasant but at times  fairly steep  bushwhacking. Slope ascends to a  gentle northwest trending ridge that eventually crests and from there must be down climbed a short distance to  continue along the ridge which becomes north trending.  The down climb  can feel steep and in our case we circumvented  skiers left on a steep slope to again get back on the ridge.  Once there it is a gentle walk to get to the base of the steeper summit south facing nose. This day the snow held bucket steps but the slopes are pretty steep. On the way up to the summit there is one  area that required going  around a rock corner on the ridge that felt somewhat exposed but had good holds and turned out to be  not a  problem. There was also a workaround on the steeps which was taken by  some on the way back.

Good capable group of mountaineers. Started from cars at 8:40. Summit 1:15. Got back around 5:00ish. 4,000 ft of gain. 8 miles.  No views but a great day.
