Winter Scramble - Cowlitz Gap & Rocks (winter)

Great weather, great party, snowshoes were not needed due to near-freezing temperatures and rain/melt/freeze crust that mostly supported us.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Snowshoes were carried but not needed due to near-freezing temperatures and rain/melt/freeze crust that mostly supported us. Most party members used microspikes or crampons near the summit. We ascended and descended the W face instead of the N ridge.

Longmire gate to Paradise opened promptly at 09:00. We began hiking (in packed snow) around 09:45, reached Cowlitz Rocks summit around 12:40, left the summit around 13:05, tagged Manastash Ridge aka Peak 6252 on the way back, returned to Paradise around 15:30.

Weather was clear and sunny with highs in the upper 30s. Very pleasant winter scramble conditions.
