Trip Report

Winter Scramble - Chutla, Eagle & Wahpenayo Peaks

Glorious clear skies and rising temperatures caused multiple small point release avalanches in our area. We abandoned our trip 2-300 feet from the saddle.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Black ice from Ashford to Longmire before 7 a.m.

About a foot of new snow had fallen in the days ahead of our trip, though the weather on our date was spectacular.  There was no boot pack up to Eagle / Chutla saddle above 5,000 ft. so we improvised our own route to the south of the summer route.  We were breaking trail on snowshoes through knee deep snow up steep slopes.  After witnessing several tree-bomb caused point release avalanches in our area, including one across our intended route, we retreated.  We wore helmets all the way to Longmire because the warming weather unleashed a savage tree-bomb attack on us all the way down.  No injuries, thank goodness.
