Chutla, Eagle & Wahpenayo Peaks

For excellent views of Rainier hike the trail to the saddle between Chutla and Eagle Peaks, 7.0 miles round trip with 3000 feet of gain. A scramble is necessary to reach the summits of these peaks and adds another mile and 800 feet of gain to your trip!

Getting There

From SR-7 in Elbe, turn east onto SR-706, both known as the National Park Highway. Continue through the Nisqually Entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. Be prepared to pay the fee just after entering the park. Drive 6 miles to Longmire (2,757 ft).

Find the Eagle Peak Trail trail past the Ranger Residences across the river via suspension bridge. Hike the trail 3.7 miles to the saddle between Eagle and Chutla.

Ascent Route

Eagle Peak (5,958 ft)

Difficulty: Strenuous 3, Technical 4

Find the Eagle Peak Trail trail past the Ranger Residences across the river via suspension bridge. Hike the trail 3.7 miles to the saddle between Eagle and Chutla. Hikers will turn around here but if you have scrambling skills you can follow a boot path from the saddle that leads you northwest through brush toward the summit block.

Wahpenayo Peak (6,231 ft)

Difficulty: Strenuous 3, Technical 3

Find the Eagle Peak Trail trail past the Ranger Residences across the river via suspension bridge. Hike the trail to 5,000 ft, where the trail reaches an open meadow. Leave the trail and head east to the saddle between Wahpenayo and Chutla at 5,800 ft. Follow the path along the ridge, southeast and then northeast to the summit.
