Trip Report

Winter Scramble - Aurora Peak (winter)

A great day in the mountains with sun breaks, snow flurries, and brief views in the afternoon.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Rain in the morning (as forecast) but changed to snow at ~3000' and the day only got better from there on (intermittent sun breaks and snow flurries).  Used snowshoes most of the day, but snow was surprisingly firm which allowed us to make great time.

Followed the Happy Lake Ridge crest all the way to the summit, a much better route than traversing lower and ascending to the summit at the end.  Quite beautiful conditions with intermittent sun/blue skies and powder snow flurries.  Photos from this trip can be seen here and here.  A great workout at 5000' elevation gain, 10 miles, with just under 9 hours total and 3.5 hours down.
