Thorp Lake, Lookout & Little Joe Lake Loop

B3 course recon: Decent weather on the 4th July weekend

  • Sat, Jul 4, 2020
  • Thorp Lake & Lookout
  • Day Hiking
  • Successful
  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • There were some potholes on way to gated off trailhead, but should be no issue unless your driving a Corvette. There is no bridge crossing Thorpe creek at trail start. We were able to cross on rocks/logs, however if there were more runoff then water shoes would be required.
There are at four large campsites on the north and east side of Thorpe Lake. Because this is a short hike makes for more fellow campers.

I would recommend Thorpe Lake for B3.

The hike up to the lookout makes for a nice day hike, though there were patches of snow at multiple places on the trail. We did not use our micro-spikes, but basketed poles we helpful.
We did the loop Back through Little Joe Lake trail which GAIA said was about 11 RT. This portion of the trail to LJL is much less used and in places the trail is much fainter and snow covered. Using our GPSs we were able to follow the trail to lake. From the lake down to the old road (now trail) is all downhill. The bottom portion is a steeper descent which trekking poles a very helpful

i would not recommend LJL for B3 course
