Trip Report

Planned trip for -3.1 low tide, hoping to see good tidal pools on Chuckanut Island. Unfortunately, turned around at 1.4 miles due to strong wind and high waves.

A beautiful day, except winds and waves were too high to complete this student paddle. Bellingham buoy reported sustained winds were 9-16 knots with gusts 16-22 knots. I observed waves approximately 2.5 feet high. For reference, NOAA predicted 1 foot waves and Ventusky.com predicted 1.5 foot waves.
Launched at 10am.
Group took break and turned around at 1.4 miles at 11:30am. Used sheltered waters in a bay behind a large rock on the way back and practiced wet exits and self/assisted rescues.
Returned to Wildcat Cove at 1:00pm to find it completely drained of water at about -2.9 foot tide. Had to walk boats across mud to get back to cars, but mud was firm and easy enough to walk on.
