Trip Report

Sea Kayak - Carr Inlet

This was a student paddle with Tacoma Basic Class students. We launched at the Horsehead Bay Boat Ramp and Circumnavigated Raft Island, stopped at Cuts Island and practiced rescues when we returned to Horsehead Bay.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The wind was predicted to be SW 9 to 10 knots  and some showers. We actually had calm waters until around 2:00.  The boat ramp does not have parking so you must park up on the road and wheel boats down to the ramp.

We met at 8:00, intending to launch at 9:00. One student was late due to getting lost and then had forgotten his spray skirt. Luckily we had a bit of time to wait and someone had an extra spray skirt. There were 3 students and 4 experienced paddlers. We launched after going over trip information. We took a short break at Kopachuck State Park and made it under the Raft Island bridge before the tide was too low. After circumnavigating Raft Island, we stopped for lunch on Cuts Island. Then we paddled back to Horsehead Bay where the students did their self and assisted rescues. Everyone was successful in doing their rescues. Then we paddled around the shoreline of Horsehead Bay and returned to the ramp.

We observed seals, eagles and herons along with gueese and various species of ducks.
