Trip Report

Lundin Peak/West Ridge

Lots of bush-wacking and confusing route, but we made it work. Students had a great attitude. GPS was extremely useful in finding the "trail" to get to the north end of Commonwealth Basin.

After breaking off from the PCT to the Red Mountain trail, we ascended too high before cutting off from the trail to get to the basin bottom. After bush-wacking our way down, we easily ascended the snow field to west ridge of Lundin. Some exposed scrambling led to a couple of pitches of 4th/5th class traversing around the North side of the ridge. We couldn't figure out what face to climb to regain the ridge, so we decided to ascend a thick brush covered slope the brought us to the base of the final pitch of climbing to the summit.

One rappel and some easy scrambling brought us to the snow field leading up to the edge of the east ridge. Some fun glissading brought us to the basin bottom where the bushwacking continued until we reached the Red Mountain trail and finally the PCT back to our cars.

We left the trail head slightly before 7am, sumitted around 3pm, and got back to our cars around 7pm for a 12hr car-to-car day. We lost a lot of time bush-wacking and route finding.
