Trip Report

Intermediate Snowshoe - Nason Ridge Peak #1

Beautiful sunny day once avy danger finally calmed down. Road walking followed by steep snow.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Tons of snow out there, and while the snow was crusty and consolidated, there was plenty of signs of recent avalanches, including several chutes with downed trees, avalanche debris and pinwheels several feet in diameter. I definitely would save this route for a day when avalanche danger is low. The road is packed down. We decided to cut up early, around 3800 ft  to cut even more of the switch back, which is steep and longer, but fun. We then wandered a bit to get to nason peak, and made it just shy of the top. We had lunch in the sun with peakaboo views. On the way back, we followed the road further to get to the more gradual decent.

Third time is a charm!  Twice cancelled due to nightmarish road conditions and high avy danger, we jumped on the window of good weather this week and the green (!) rating from nwac. I have been eyeing this trip for a while since I rarely saw trip reports. None of us had done the trip so we all went in with enthusiasm for exploring, and that we did. There was definitely route finding challenges once we got off the road and we compared routes with gps and compass. We decided to turn around a bit before hitting the top after finding a nice sunny spot with views to lunch. On the way back, we followed the more standard route, cutting down father along the road to avoid the steeper terrain, and did a combination of traversing, plunge steps, postholing, and booty sliding in the soft snow.
