Trip Report

Grindstone Mountain

Trip date 9/6/15. This was scheduled as part of the Scramble Labor Day Weekend. Most of us were camped at the Eight Mile campground, where it started raining hard at 4:15 am. We delayed our scheduled start of 7:00 am until 8:00, with the thin hope that the heavy rain would subside. We figured we could stand hiking in light rain, just not the heavy rain we were experiencing in the early morning. Luckily for us, the heavy rain slacked off to a light rain at 8:00 and about half of us headed to the trail head. (The rest opted for the luxury of brunch in a dry, warm restaurant in Leavenworth and an early return to Seattle.) Five of us hiked up the trail. The rain stopped at 11:00. By the time we reached the pass, the snow was 4 inches deep and we were enveloped in fog. We opted to turn around at the pass. The weather kept improving on the way down and we actually had sunlight and shadows for the final 15 minutes.
