Day Hike - Mount Teneriffe

2/3 of main trail covered in snow. Snow was well compacted so microspikes were fine, in lieu of snowshoes. Successfully summited.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail was wet but not muddy, except in the usual high-traffic low spots where water naturally pools.  2/3 of main trail covered in snow. Snow was well compacted so microspikes were fine, in lieu of snowshoes.

We started our hike at 8 AM at the Mt. Si main trailhead (The Teneriffe trail parking lot closes at 4 PM, and we didn't want our vehicles detained in case we had a late return).  We took the main Mt. Si trail up to the Talus connector and followed that over to the main Teneriffe trail.  Connector was wet, but clear of obstacles.  Teneriffe trail was also wet, but clear of obstacles.  About 1/3 of the way up we hit snow, which remained consistent all the way to the summit.   I've hiked this route nearly a dozen times and this is the most snow that I've ever seen on the trail.  The map sign at the Mt. Si connector is typically about 7' off the ground.  Yesterday, the sign was barely 6" above the level of the snow.  Most of the streams that you typically cross were all covered in snow.  Only 2 remained exposed, one of which was a little sketchy to descend and ascend.  Once you get to the saddle, the typically wandering route through the trees was a single clearly marked boot path in the compacted snow.  The only "drawback" was that it was more of a direct route straight up the ridge, rather than lots of switchbacks.  Summit had a ton of snow, though visibility was less than 100' in all directions.  No issues on decent.  Total time was 8 hours at a very leisurely pace with 5 people with varying degrees of fitness and two 15-20 min. breaks.
