Trip Report

Day Hike - Mailbox Peak

We had a great hike up Mailbox today going up the old trail and coming down the new.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The route was in great condition for those who like micro-spike hiking in winter conditions which our whole group does.  We put our spikes on about halfway up the forested section on the old trail and kept them on until back down to about two miles from the trailhead on the new trail.  Both spikes and trekking poles were definitely an asset and were most needed once above the talus field going up the final spine which had noticeable ice underneath the more recent fallen snow.

There is a lot of snow on Mailbox now which added greatly to the adventure.  There is no evidence of the mailbox right now as it is totally buried in the snow.  The clouds were definitely moving in as forecasted but we still had some terrific views.   We had a great group and were well balanced in hiking abilities and  could not have had a better time.
