Trip Report

Day Hike - Lower Big Quilcene

A beautiful hike full of mosses and lichens to see and the sounds of waterfalls and the rushing river to hear. Roads in good shape getting to the trailhead.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail was very muddy in spots and the trail is getting wider as people try to avoid the mud.  Stream crossings very easy today.  In addition to hikers we also saw mountain bikers and 2 motorcycles.

We arrived around 9:45 to a full parking lot and had to park along the road leading to the parking lot.  Each of the three cars with us took a wrong turn at some point but quickly recognized their mistake so we didn't lose much time. (the distance between turns on the WTA website appear to be longer than written)  Hiking was beautiful - lots of mosses and lichens, and flowers are starting to bloom - we saw violets, trillium, salmonberry, and coltsfoot.  We ate lunch at the turn-around point (Camp Jolly) and observed tents set up on both sides of the creek.  In addition to hikers we saw a few mountain bikers and two motorcycles.
