The trail is in good condition overall. It does need some work to fix eroding stretches, especially where steps are built in.
Cool, comfortable weather greeted us on our 8:15 start from Longmire. A trio of deer wandered around the buildings enjoying their fresh greens breakfast:
The upper slopes still had lots of colorful wildflowers mixed with thousands of Bear Grass stalks. We enjoyed awesome views and clear blue sky from our lunch spot at the saddle. A few bugs were annoying but not bad. Our bonus treat was sweet huckleberries! Many were also just beginning. Only saw three or four other hikers - quite a contrast to the popular trails around Paradise and Sunrise.
