Trip Report

Day Hike - Burroughs Mountain

Snow on trail is signficiant. Not advised for beginners or hikers not experienced with snow travel.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • As of 07/13/2019, the snow patches on the trail are significant. Little to no runout if one were to fall. Dirt trail is well maintained.

As of 07/13/2019, the snow patches on the trail are significant. Our group was able to cross the first two with trekking poles and caution. However, by the third patch, we turned around as the slope and runout were concerning enough that a fall without an ice ax would be bad news. The bootpack on the snow below First Burroughs summit is well tracked with some wands showing the route, but it is only wide enough for one person at a time (so running into oncoming hikers is a challenge) and there is little to no runout below the patches. I would not attempt this again without traction/crampons and an ice ax. Note that there were several groups in tennis shoes who pushed on past us, however, I spoke with several rangers and was told that they advised against trying with the snow in its current status.
