Trip Report

Day Hike - Big Creek

Seven intrepid souls took a chance with a marginal weather forecast to hike the Big Creek loop up to the big tree ridge. We kept a moderate pace, gained 2300', had great conversation, and avoided getting rained on!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail conditions are great thanks to the Mount Rose Trail crew who worked hard to fix a broken bridge and clear downed trees and debris. Except a couple tiny patches that will soon be melted away, the trail is snow free up to where we ended around 3,000'.

The plan was to hike the loop counterclockwise then continue to a little past the lower Ellinor trail connector. The group was well matched for interests and abilities. We completed a little over 8 miles with 2,300' gain in 5 hours, with 3 hours 45 minutes moving time. Moving time turned out to be the planned 2mph pace. The weather forecast leading into the trip was originally calling for heavy rains, but as the weekend neared, the forecast changed. Sunday was supposed to be about 60% chance of rain with the best time in the morning. It was a light mist in the first part, but quickly dried out. Temps in the 40s. Because of the time change (spring ahead) we pushed the start time from 8Am to 9:15AM meet time. We were hiking by 9:15AM because everyone arrived early. All participants did great.
