Buell & Barrier Peaks

Enjoyed a great day in rain and snow, with a summit of Buell. Appreciated the sun coming out on the summit, and a bit of clearing.

Ran into snow on the drive over Cayuse pass, we were wondering what the day had in store for us. 90% chance of rain before 11 am snow showers in afternoon forecast. Planned on getting wet. Left Deer Creek trail head at 8:30 am. Hiked in 2.85 miles to last switch back and left the trail on what appeared to be an obvious boot path,  or a well established game trail. Followed for  a short way heading too far east, headed off up hill NW skirting around several cliff bands to gain correct bearing to saddle.  1 foot of snow at saddle and above. Summited Buell at 12:15. A bit of sun and blue sky on summit and minimal views as clouds blew in and out. 1 Elk  cow scampered off below us as we hit summit.

Rest of the day fairly dry. Wettest part of day  just below summit as snow melted off trees.Returned from saddle to trail on bearing of 234' . Better route putting us back to the trail .2 of a mile west of last switch back at  bridge over gully with small creek.

Enjoyed many beautiful waterfalls on trail. Back at car at 15:30 Great day  to be out weather not as wet as we anticipated. Party members recovering from injuries earlier in season, both felt strong all day. Barrier was not in the plan for the day.
