Trip Report

Basic Rock Climb - Kangaroo Temple/North Face

Smooth trip up Kangaroo Temple with a strong, fit group.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The approach was snow-free and straightforward other than a bit of bushwhacking at the start, and we found the trail up to the saddle relatively quickly thanks to a recent GPS track from Krishna Dase on Peakbagger (https://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=1212685).  There was a limited amount of running water near the hairpin but none on the rest of the approach.  The climber's trail from the col to the base of the route was straightforward to follow.

Our group of eight started out at 5:30AM from the hairpin and made quick work of the approach.

The climbing was straightforward with two teams taking the optional fourth pitch to climber's left after the step-around, and the group took a few minutes to enjoy the summit views and have a snack.

Two of the rope leads rigged a single-rope rappel followed by a double-rope rappel back to the notch, and team had all sat-and-spun their way back down to the notch by just after noon.  The group discussed pursuing another nearby objective (the "Fin") due to the amount of time left in the day, but was unable to determine its location due to the limited amount of beta on-hand.

The team hiked out, taking a quick break at the col, and was back at the cars in just under 8.5 hours total time.  Overall, it was a breathtaking climb both for the views and the brisk pace, and the group regathered down in Mazama for snacks and beers in the shade.
