Backpack - Ancient Lake

Fantastic easy one night backpack with a great group. No real bugs, heard one rattlesnake, but was not able spot it. Clear skies, weather in the low 50s at night, low 80s during the day. We were able to have a small campfire.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

From the parking lot described on the WTA website, there is some scrambling involved in getting to the camp sites / the trail is a little rough. Nothing too bad though. There are two trail heads, one descends, the other starts low... but both are about the same distance to the lakes.  Recommend a little planning a head and make sure you choose the right trail head.

The trail system in the area is very braided, though navigation is pretty easy. We explored a bit and headed out to Dusty Lake, which was stunningly beautiful and probably only 1.5 miles from the ancient lakes via a use trail over the mesa. There appeared to be no one camping there, one might go a little further to Dusty lake if privacy is desired.

Less then two hours from parking lot to camp site both ways.
