Alpine Scramble - Mount Ellinor & Mount Washington

Fabulous day out in the Olympics.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
    • Couldn't make it to the upper trailhead because of snow on the road at the hairpin, ~3000. No tracks in the snow either. Maybe another week before it melts out?
    • Lower trail was dry until we hit consistent snow rather abruptly at 3300'.
    • Main snow route was reasonably firm, but starting to quickly soften in the sun baked sections. This was especially notable off the beaten path.
    • Glissade chute was massive, shoulder height in spots.

A wonderful scramble! 3:10 car to summit, including some scouting of the potential route over to Mt. Washington. 1:30 down, with the glissades going quickly. Everyone did really well.

We had hoped to traverse over to Mt. Washington, but decided not to, in part because of snow conditions. We noticed fresh avy debris in the basins, and the snow was already very soft at 11am.
