Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Mount Baring/Northwest Ridge

Baring lives up to its reputation of a steep and beautiful scramble.

  • Road rough but passable
  • The trip from the parking lot to the ridge is steep and rooty as expected. There are flaggings in places near small off-shoots.

    Ridge is snow free.

The gully after the ridge is half in snow, with some thin snow areas that will soon punch through into the creek. Rest of the route is mostly snow free except a few patches in the upper gully but they are avoidable with a little bushwhacking.

Baring proves how 4000 feet of gain can feel completely different when most of the elevation is gained in just a few miles. Good times with a solid group.
