Alpine Scramble - Hibox Mountain

Perfect weather, and a fantastic summit was enjoyed by all.

  • Road rough but passable
  • We took the standard route following the Rachael Lake trail 2.5 miles and following the boot path up the ridge. The is a lot of dead fall on the trail and the boot path up the ridge. Sometimes making it easy to loss the boot path. Below the summit block there is still a good amount of snow requiring kicking steps and use of ice axes. Although the talus field south of the summit is clear of snow and has a lot of loss rocks to be kicked down on others. The rock climb to the summit has no new issues and was easily attained. There is a relatively new summit register, white PVC pipe style with names for the last couple years.

We had perfect weather for this trip, although there was a big rain storm the day before leaving some soggy conditions on the trail. There were blue skies all day and views in every direction. The trip description says 8 miles it seems like more. I was able to find a GPS route that showed 9.14 miles. The boot path is a little broken up and we lost it a couple of times briefly. Otherwise no issues and had a great time of it. There is a relatively new summit register, white PVC pipe style with names for the last couple years. We all added to the list and recognized names of Mountaineers from last years trips.
