Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Hawkins Mountain

Great Scramble, took Camp Creek road all the way in (room for 3 cars only). Hiked on Trail 1392 and after crossing the creek caught a ridge all the way to the top. Watch out for ticks and loose rock.

  • Road recommended for high clearance only
  • Route was fairly straight forward, creek crossing is fine, most of the snow is melted out. It is now a rock scramble. If you are trying to tag the east summit, you'll need to bring an ice ax fr a few more weeks.

Took the Salmon La Sac Rd to Camp Creek Rd (140), drove all the way until we reached the end of the road.  There is only room for 3 cars max, hiked on Trail 1392 until we crossed Big Boulder Creek. The creek was easy to cross, and will be easy with summer coming.  After crossing the creek we took the ridge up to a more defined ridge at 5200 ft.  We were greeted with beautiful views of Rainier and Mount Daniels and Hinman.  Continued up the ridge to the false summit and trended NW to hit the true summit.  I replaced the register with a few pages of waterproof paper because it was full. A more official replacement is needed.

We went the same way for our descent, a participant sprained her knee. We made did a self-rescue and she is recovering. We only crossed patches of snow. It is great to go for a moderate rock scramble.
