Alpine Scramble - French Cabin Mountain/West Peak

This trip was mostly a pleasant trail hike, with about 400 to 500 feet of rock scrambling at the end. Views were excellent.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • I was expecting we might need to wade some of the stream crossings, but we always were able to find a way across, with several logs right where we needed them.  The snow is gone other than a few small patches on the trail that will melt soon.

We took the Silver Creek trail to the junction with the trail that crosses the south ridge of French Cabin.  We scrambled up from the trail a short distance, but then stayed on the west side of the ridge.  There is some loose rock on the route, but it was generally easy to travel across the slope so that the few rocks that were kicked loose didn't endanger anyone.

This is not a wilderness; we encountered 2 people on mountain bikes, and the summit views include logging roads and clearcuts.  Still, the more distant views were great, and there were plenty of flowers in bloom and birds singing, especially thrushes (Hermit, Swainson's, Varied).
