Only a few small patches of snow here and there means this trip is now a hike. Leave the helmet, ice axe, and traction devices at home. If you have strong ankles you can also consider using approach shoes for the entire trip.
To add variety (plus a bit more scramble terrain ;) we went cross country along the ridgelet/open ground/game trails that parallels the north side of Mueller creek between the lower road (~1/8 mile NE of the parking lot at ~2500’) and the upper road leading to the start of the Tyler Peak way trail (~3200’). After ascending this trail to reach Tyler Peak, we ran the ridge crest to Baldy, then descended the Upper Maynard Burn trail to ~3200’. Finally, we traversed along a good track on an old logging road to the SW before descending the Lower Maynard Burn trail to the Royal Basin trail, and a knee soothing hike back to the cars. Besides providing variety, this loop avoids a crossing of Mueller Creek at ~3200’ which can be troublesome during high stream flows (not the case currently as most of the snow is gone). Total time was just over 8 hours, with 3 hours up to Tyler, and 1 more to Baldy. Photos from this and other trips to this venue can be seen here.
