Yellow Aster Butte

Yellow Aster Butte is a moderate scramble of 8 miles with 3,200 feet of gain in the Mount Baker Wilderness.

driving directions

From I-5, Exit 255 in Bellingham and drive 34 miles on SR 542 (Mount Baker Highway) to the Glacier Ranger Station. Continue on SR 542 to 13 miles and turn north on Twin Lakes Road and drive 4.7 miles to the Tomyhoi Lake/Yellow Aster Butte Trailhead at 3,600 ft.

approach & ascent

Follow the new Tomyhoi Lake/Yellow Aster Butte trail to the fork at 5,050 ft where it is clearly marked left to Yellow Aster Butte and straight to Tomyhoi Lake. Turn left and follow the trail until you wrap around to Yellow Aster Butte at about 5,300 ft where you will find a tarn. Take the way trail to the right and upward, ascending the butte to the ridge. The true summit lies at the north end of the ridge. Descend the climbing route.
