The Elwhall & Waka Beach

Two sandstone sport rock climbing crags on east and west sides of the Elwha River west of Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula.

Getting There

The ElWhall

Drive US-101 west from Port Angeles and turn right onto SR-112. Shortly after crossing the bridge over the Elwha River, look for the angled parking on the left, the Olympic Discovery Trail: Adventure Route Trailhead. Park here and hike the trail until it intersects with a power line road. Turn left on this road, hike east until reaching an access path on the right. Follow this path to the crag.

Waka Beach

Drive US-101 west from Port Angeles and turn right onto SR-112. Take the last left before the bridge over the Elwha River onto Lower Dam Road. Park in the gravel lot on the left and walk past the gate on Lower Dam Road until reaching a field. Hike the trail on the right down to the crag.

Climbing Routes

Waka Beach, on the east side of the river, features various routes in the 5.7-5.9 range. The Elwhall, on the west side of the river, includes mostly routes of 5.10 and above. The climbing on both crags is characterized by blocky routes on soft sandstone. All routes are bolted, and the rock quality does not allow for secure trad gear placements. Note that many of the routes at Waka Beach are inaccessible until later in the summer when the water level is lower.
