Duwamish Trail & West Duwamish Greenbelt

Explore five or more round trip miles with nearly 800 feet of elevation gain in West Seattle. The Duwamish Trail follows the river that runs through the heart of Seattle's industrial district, and the West Duwamish Greenbelt looks down on the river.

Once one of the most productive waterways within Puget Sound, the Duwamish has been channeled and polluted and its extensive, rich estuarine mudflats fill in and paved over. But, thanks to conservationists, concerned citizens, tribal members and enlightened officials, the river is slowly being cleaned up.  Follow a paved level path through a couple of pocket parks rife with history and remnants of the past.  Walk past and through a few remaining natural areas where life still makes its home among cargo containers, factories, terminals, and concrete plants.
