Explore the coast, south of La Push for 3 days - paddling, surfing, rock gardening and camping. Wilderness camping for 2 nights at / or near Toleak Point.

Launch by 10am with loaded boats. Final meeting time and place may be modified based on conditions: e.g. in the protected nook just south of the jetty.

The leader has reserved two camp sites at Mora Campground (near La Push) on Thursday July 13th and participants can arrive late the night before the trip.

GOALS:
Have fun safely exploring these dynamic waters.
Paddle together in a cohesive group, to insure CLAP (Communication, Line of Sight, Avoidance, Position of most effectiveness).
Participate in group decision and abide by decisions.

 COST:
Permits and shared camping costs about $22-30.  Purchase of permits (Olympic National Park Wilderness Permit is $8/per person per night) will be made in May, close to the trip date. My plan is to spend two nights camping at Toleak Point. The permits do need to be made in advance so there is a risk the cost would be forfeited if the weather is not conducive to this trip.

CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Conditions must be within the following for this trip to go:
Winds under 20kt, and not much above 15kt
Swell such that we anticipate the shore break we need to transition will be under 3". 
No big rainfall
Minimum of 3 participants.

 REQUIREMENTS:
Previous Incident Management Clinic
Have a reliable roll.
Ability to land and launch in 3 foot surf and paddle in 4-6 foot wind waves.
Previous experience in dynamic water (e.g. Deception, Hobuck, etc.)
A plastic / tough kayak suitable for surf and rock gardening.
Approved bear cannisters for food and toilet articles that is carried in boat.
Experience with wilderness camping from a kayak.

Required Equipment

These eight essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.

  1. Floatation in both ends of the kayak
  2. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  3. Paddle
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Bilge pump with floatation
  6. Self-rescue paddle float
  7. Waterproof whistle
  8. Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
  9. ADVANCED TRIP REQUUIREMENTS: Helmet, gloves, VHF, short and long tow ropes
