Hobuck Beach & Neah Bay

Sea Kayak - Hobuck Beach

Intermediate SK V paddles out of Hobuck area, based on conditions. Paddlers who are signed up for the Surf Clinic on June 3 can sign up for this paddle (that pod will paddle specifically to Anderson Point.)

  • Sea Kayak V
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 15 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 4 ft
  • Pace: 3.5

Meet at the INTERMEDIATE sign in camping area ready to paddle by 9am. We will review weather forecast, finalized plans for the day (ie, decide where we will paddle today), and divide up into smaller groups of up to 8 participants with 2 leaders each.

Intermediate Paddles Objective: Explore Makah Bay, Shi Shi Beach and Cape Flattery areas, as long as wind and surf conditions are moderate. We will plan a trip for the intermediate paddler based on the current forecast expect to paddle 6-12 nm, 2-4 ft waves and surf, 10-15 kt winds.

Our potential paddle options include going to Shi Shi Beach (12 nm RT), Cape Flattery area (12 nm RT) or to Anderson Point at the south end of Makah Bay (6 nm RT.)  We are hoping that at least one of the paddle groups  will be paddling through the surf to Anderson Point at the south end of Makah Bay as an introduction to open coastal kayaking, and graduates of the kayak Surf Clinic on June 3 would be eligible to go on this.  It's about 5-6 nm round trip and will launch and land through surf.

Backup plan: if conditions constrain us, we'll likely move our paddle to Neah Bay to explore 1st, 2nd and 3rd Beaches and possibly portions of Waadah Island

All participants must also sign up for the wider Seminar this Activity is a part of: https://www.mountaineers.org/locations-lodges/seattle-branch/committees/seattle-sea-kayaking-committee/seminars-clinics/surf-and-camping-weekend-hobuck-beach-neah-bay
