Deception Pass

Trip

Sea Kayak - Deception Pass

Join a group of peers paddling a fast ebb current in Deception Pass. Max ebb this day is -6.0 @ 11:40am

  • Sea Kayak IV
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 5.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 20 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 5 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 7 kts
  • Pace: Moderate

Meet at Bowman bay for a 8:00am shore talk and launch soon after that.
(note that there is another group meeting for a 8:00am shore talk).

This trip is an opportunity to develop our skills in the company of other paddlers.  There are no plans for instruction but we can coach each other.  Everyone can bring skills that they want to work on.  We will work together in mutual support of skills and safety.

Participants must have previous experience paddling in currents.  This is for people who have paddled in moderate currents and feel ready to challenge themselves with faster currents.  At 6.0 knots, the confused water in the diffuse eddies is powerful.  Your balance and brace reflex will be tested.  A roll is useful, but not necessary.  I expect people will capsize and get rescued.

There is another group in the pass today and we will work around them.  This means we will do more outside the pass however, we will have plenty of time in the pass at max ebb.

If wind is up, we can always hope, we will work with wind and wavs.

Timing for the day:

  •   8:00 - Shore talk
  •   8:15 - Launch and poke around as we paddle into the pass.
  • 10:00 - At Canoe Pass
  • 11:40 - Max ebb
  • 14:00-15:00 - Back at Bowman Bay
