Sea Kayak - Columbia River: Tenasillahe & Welch Islands

Explore the many islands of the lower Columbia River on this one-way shuttle trip from Westport, Oregon to the mouth of the John Day River near Astoria. The forecast is for easterly winds and the tide will be with us for much of the way.

Meet at the boat ramp at John Day County Park  near Astoria at 7:30am to set up the shuttle. We will consolidate boats/gear and then drive to the put in at Westport. 

There is a $5 fee for parking at John Day County Park. No fee for Westport.

There are facilities at both the put in and take out locations.

Bring a sail if you have it! There may be opportunities to use it as long as we can keep the group together.

The river level is relatively high, so there may be limited access to get out of the boats along the way.

Required Equipment

These eight essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.

  1. Floatation in both ends of the kayak
  2. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  3. Paddle
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Bilge pump with floatation
  6. Self-rescue paddle float
  7. Waterproof whistle
  8. Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
