Tesseract Canyon

Trip

Intermediate Canyon - Tesseract Canyon

Tesseract is spectacular and gorgeous. The canyon starts with approx 500 feet of sheer drop-off (across 3 long rappels.) An absolute treat! This is an early-season Intermediate trip of Tesseract Canyon, and a mentored lead for Shyam. There is a strong chance we'll be doing some anchor maintenance / building on this trip. Leader permission necessary.

  • Intermediate Canyon
  • Moderate
  • Elevation Gain: 1,200 ft

We plan to meet at the Gas station in Tanner, WA at 8AM (This time may change depending on conditions/weather - Details to be confirmed in a pre-trip email.)

We will scout the trailhead ahead of time, to make sure that the snow has melted enough to do the initial sequence.

That being said, it is NOT safe to provide either a bottom-belay or a top-belay due to the layout of the canyon. If you sign up for this trip, make sure that you're confident and proficient at moving carefully (due to potential for rope-cut) and efficiently on LONG rappels, and are familiar with techniques to manage abrasion, or help anchor-managers to manage abrasion.

Furthermore, we expect to be the first group down the canyon this year equipped with anchor maintenance tools. We will need to inspect any anchors and potentially drill new bolts. This *may* result in extended time in cold/windy anchor spots.

Please be ready to be flexible! Bring a wind-shell, warm layers, and extra snacks. Potentially consider using a dry-suit. There's the chance that we may either need to be either very slow (anchor maintenance/rebuilding in wind-tunnels) OR very quick and efficient (if there is rockfall, or other unforeseen risk.)
