Day Hike - Capitol Hill

Early evening, 2 hour, (many) stairs climb hike from Capitol Hill to Portage Bay and return.

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 3.7 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 600 ft

Meet shortly before 6pm in front of the Volunteer Park Conservatory on E Highland Drive in Seattle's Volunteer Park.  Be ready to start walking Tuesday, December 5 at 6 pm with a return around 8 pm.

This up-and-down walk is a slight variation on Walk #9 in Jake & Cathy Jaramillo's 2013 Seattle Stairway Walks, Mountaineers Books.  The guide calls for 2.3 miles but we add about 1.2 miles (total ~ 3.5) by parking in well lit Volunteer Park.  Metro Transit Bus Route 10 provides excellent service.

Our route takes us down Blaine Stairs (293 steps), through Colonnade Mountain Bike Skills Park, up Howe Stairs (127 steps), over SR 520 to Roanoke Park, and down near Lk Washington (Astrid's Park, 41 steps down, if conditions allow).  Return is similar to E Miller St, then along Broadway E to the last section of the Howe Stairs (170 steps up), and return to Volunteer Park.

Total steps down ~349 and total steps up ~337.

Dress for the weather and the evening.  It will be dark and some travel is on city streets, so headlamps are required and reflective clothing is advised.
