Day Hike - The Hummocks

Come join us on a 2.4 mile loop hike to discover the volcanic features of Mt. St. Helens and hopefully enjoy the wildflowers. All adults must be accompanied by a child on this family activity.

Meet at the Hummock/ Boundary Trailhead at 10:30am. We will be ready to hike by 10:45am and return to the trailhead by 1pm or earlier. 

From Castle Rock, drive east on Highway 504 (also known as the Spirit Lake Highway for 43 miles. Take the right fork signed for Johnston Ridge Visitor Center, and stay on 504. Drive another two miles to the Hummock/Boundary trailhead on the right.

The goal of this family hike is to enjoy seeing the hummocks and wildflowers as well as potential mountain view and to enjoy meeting other families and hiking together. We want everyone to feel welcome! This trip is for all ages and ability levels. I hope to collaborate and enjoy learning from each other.

FAMILY ESSENTIALS

1. Nutrition + Spare Food: Snacks, spare food for an
emergency - at least one per person
2. Hydration/Water: Your water plus extra for kids, and
filtration for refills. Consider a thermos for cold activities.
3. Illumination: small powerful flashlight or headlamp and
spare batteries - just in case.
4. Emergency Shelter: A small emergency blanket or
poncho for each person. Heavy Duty drop clothes can
work for the whole family.
5. First Aid: Allergy, asthma, bee sting supplies, sports
tape, ace bandage, Band-Aids, alcohol wipes, bug spray,
Hot Hands for hypothermia
6. Navigation: Map of area in a Ziploc, compass if you
know how to use it, phone or other GPS/map function
7. Insulation/Extra Clothes: Hats, gloves, dry socks, extra
warm wraps, hat for sun/ rain/snow, rain gear
8. Sun protection: A must in the snow!!! Sunglasses, hats,
sunscreen, lip balm
9. Tools and repair: Multi-tool, duct tape
10. Fire: Consider bringing a stove for hot beverage in the
winter, matches/lighter
11. Potty pack: T.P or Kleenex packs, wet wipes, bag for
waste
12. Safety: ID and emergency info, whistles. Leave copy of travel
plan with someone.
