Day Hike - Mailbox Peak

Up and down the old trail for old times' sake...

  • Very Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,100 ft
  • Pace: 1500 ft/hr

7:30 am at upper trailhead parking area.

Open to all branches. Trip is designed for Basic Climbing students needing to meet conditioner requirements. Students will need to carry a pack weighing the greater of 30 pounds or 20% of their body weight while keeping up with the group. Required: MicroSpikes or crampons and Discover pass (one per vehicle). Recommended/optional: Trekking poles.

This conditioner is structured to try and ensure that everyone gets a workout while still allowing those who are building their conditioning to participate without worrying about being "the slow one". Please ensure you are comfortable with these ground rules:

  1. To ensure everyone gets sufficient conditioning, we will each hike up at our own pace.
  2. We will hike down together as a group.
  3. Because of the potential for you to be hiking alone, you must have done the Old Mailbox Peak trail before and be able to navigate it alone.
  4. Once I reach the summit, I'll start a timer (depends on weather conditions). If anyone has not reached the summit by the time the timer goes off, we'll start heading down and collect folks on the descent.
  5. I'm estimating about 2-2.5 hrs to reach the summit.

So for anyone whose time to summit is higher than that, you may not reach the top, but you can still participate and gauge your progress by notching higher "high points". My thanks to Travis Prescott for coming up with this approach.
