Day Hike - Lake George

Visit Lake George, one of the picturesque alpine lakes of Mt. Rainier National Park, hiking 3.5 miles on an abandoned section of the West Side Road and .9 mile on a trail each direction.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.8 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,425 ft

Meet at 9 AM at the Gateway Inn, which is just outside the Nisqually Entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park.  To get there, drive south on either SR 7 or SR 169 to Elbe and then east on SR 706 through Ashford to the road end at the National Park entrance.

This may be the last opportunity this year to swim in a mountain lake, depending on the weather.  Each car will need to show a National Park Pass or pay a $25 entrance fee upon entering Mount Rainier National Park.  Following the hike, we will have an optional refreshment stop at the Copper Creek Inn.

NOTE:  This hike will only go to Lake George and back, not on the continuation to Gobbler's  Knob.
