Day Hike - Golden Gardens Stairways

Hike city streets through Loyal Heights to Golden Gardens stairs with a descent to the sandy beach and return.

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 5.4 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 719 ft

We'll meet shortly before 6pm across the street from the Seaview Boatyard about 6400 Seaview Ave NW at the foot of  the wide, sloping sidewalk that heads south along the Burlington Northern Railway. About 2.5 hours unless a dramatic sunset and soft sands slow our return.

Early evening hikes in the city call for headlamps and urban variations on the 10 essentials.  No cotton, please, but reflective items add to our safety crossing city streets. Sunset is 8:13 pm, civil twilight a half hour later. Smaller umbrellas are OK, too.

Participants familiar with Seattle's history, architecture, urban horticulture or other insights to our route are welcome to help with the narration.  Pace will adjust to hikers' comfort and fitness level -- this is not a marathon but a reasonable level of fitness is assumed for about 5 miles with at least 313 steps up and 272 steps down.

The Golden Gardens hike is the 12th of 25 planned hikes from Seattle Stairways Walks. We've nominated a beaver-felled tree for the National Register of Downed Trees (Pacific Coast Division). Check out the Seattle Stairways blog here: http://www.seattlestairwaywalks.com/.
