Day Hike - Golden Gardens

Walk under the rail tracks up through Loyal Heights to catch the many flights of stairs from Crown Heights down to Golden Gardens. With low tide at 9:02, walk along the beach to search for sea shells, a sunset and beavers. Return with a stair climb to retrace our route.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 5.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 720 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 322 ft
  • Pace: 2.0 mph

Meet shortly before 6pm along Seaveiw Ave NW just north of the Sunset West Condominium where there is a short ramp up to the Burke Gilman Trail. The Seaview Bay Boatyard is across the street, part of Shilshole Bay Marina.  On street parking or Metro 33.

This stairways walk is expanded from Jake and Cathy Jaramillo's Golden Gardens #3 excursion (Seattle Stairway Walks).  The long, gentle ascent is a great way to reach the stairs with views out over Puget Sound to the Olympics (weather willing).  The cascading stairs -- Upper Bluff 134, Upper Meadow 16, Lower Bluff 108, Tunnel 14 -- foretells the challenge of the return.  We'll travel at a pace to get us back around an 8:20 sunset.  Hikers should have the fitness to manage the ascent. The beach area is ever interesting , a much loved retreat from the hustle of the city.
