Day Hike - Balsamroot Trail

Bring your camera, your flower guide and a desire to walk through a magical land of wildflowers. The Wenatchee Foothills are packed with wildflowers from late April through May. We will hike the balsamroot trail at a good photographer's pace to spend as much time as possible photographing the beauty.

  • Moderate
  • Easy
  • Mileage: 5.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 700 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 2,410 ft
  • Pace: 1 mph

We will meet at 5am at the Monroe Park & Ride to form carpools. This is a very popular destination so the fewer cars we bring and the earlier we get there the better.

Please note, I lead photography hikes not as miles per hour but as photographs per mile. This is a leisurely pace for photographers who want to make photographs along the way and not necessarily a destination hike where we reach a turnaround point. We will instead have a turnaround time. There could be a lot of standing around waiting for someone to get their composition right. We will hike and stay as a group - no one will go ahead, and we won't leave anyone behind. You'll be able to photograph wildflowers up close and within the landscape. Naturalists are welcome who wish to hike a causal pace to identify flowers, plants, and birds. Our route will start from the lower parking lot (no bathrooms) to hike the Balsamroot Trail. The length of the trail is 2 miles with a 500-foot elevation gain. We will decide as a group if we want to continue beyond the junction if time allows. Please plan for that option.

All levels of photographic skill are welcome, your leader will gladly help you understand the nature of photographing wildflowers, however technical camera advice can be lacking (I don't know where all the buttons or menu items are). In that vein, all levels of camera are welcome too - yes, your cell phone camera is welcome. All levels of hiking experience are also welcome, however as this is a photo hike you will be expected to wait for the photographers - this is not a hike to get your heart rate up.
