Cross-country Ski - Sun Mountain Trails

A classic ski trip in the PNW’s mecca for Nordic skiing, Methow Valley. Suitable for competent beginners to advanced skiers alike.

Details to follow. It is recommended to stay in Winthrop which has numerous lodging options. 

The tentative plan (subject to change) is as follows.

Round 1:  Starting at Chickadee Trailhead, we will all warm up on Little Wolf to Lower Fox to Sunnyside (3km). Here we may break into two groups. Group A returns to Chickadee TH via Yellow Jacket (blue) for a 5.3km loop.  Group B returns to Chickadee TH via Rodeo (black), making a 6km loop.

We will stop for a short clothing and water break at the Chickadee Trailhead warming hut.

Round 2: From Chickadee TH we ascend Thompson Ridge Road (blue), 5.1km to Thompson Pass where we will take a short clothing and water break.  Here we may break into two groups.  Group A returns to Chickadee TH down Thompson Ridge Road, for a 10km out and back.  Group B returns to Chickadee TH via Upper Inside Passage (black) to Lower Inside Passage (black), also a 10km loop.

We will take a lunch break at the Chickadee Trailhead warming hut.  For most, this will be the end of your skiing day.

Round 3: From Chickadee TH we will take Chickadee Trail (green) to Cabin Trail (blue) to Upper Winthrop Trail (black) to Winthrop Trail (blue) to the Winthrop Trail trailhead on twin Lakes Road, for a 6km mostly downhill bonus run. 

WE WILL LEAVE A SHUTTLE VEHICLE AT WINTHROP TRAIL TH IN THE MORNING ON THE WAY UP TO SUN MTN.
